St John's School
The quality and finish of the Serota furniture is superb and Michael was very accommodating and patient as our ideas evolved - listening and making suggestions which have worked very well in practice. Working with one person continuously on the library layout and furniture design from start to finish was particularly helpful.
Sally Todd, Librarian, St John's School
St Johns, Leatherhead is a leading independent day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 11 to 18.
In 2010, the Henry Dawes teaching block was opened to house the new library, design and technology workshop, art studio, IT suite and additional classrooms.
Quality furniture and shelving were required which would adapt to the expectant growing number of pupils as well as complement the building environment. Sally Todd, the St John's Librarian, worked with Michael Serota on the library design and provided recommendations to senior management for the new library in terms of space, colour, zoning and facilities.
To capitalise on the natural light, study tables were situated by the large floor length windows. Bookcases of varying height on concealed castors were positioned in the middle of the library so they could easily be moved to suit different events. The reception desk was designed and positioned to provide staff with good sightlines and a view of library users as well as those entering the building.
The library features an area with tables and a smartboard so that Teaching staff can hold classes for research using the library resources. Individual pupils still have room for private study, reading in the easy chairs or borrowing books.
Situated on the ground floor of the Henry Dawes building, the library is highly visible, easily accessible and offers a welcoming study environment.
